What to look for when choosing a seedbox!

Welcome back! Oh you never left? Great to hear that!

So this chapter will help you choose the plan that suits your needs and of course your wallet.

By the way, if you haven’t read our previous articles about “What is a seedbox?” and “Why should you get a seedbox?” you can do that now (please feel free to do that now) I will be waiting for you here to come back!

So let’s see how you can choose the best seedbox plan for you.

1.     Budget.

First of all you should know what your budget is. How much are you willing to spend or can you spend on a monthly or weekly basis for this hobby or privacy/security of yours? Write that down.

2.     How much space do you need?

This is where you will store your files from the torrents you will be downloading. I would personally suggest you not to go for something small (based on my needs at least). If the speed doesn’t matter that much to you, go for an HDD, but if you want to rule that section and you are going for a 500MBps+ speed go for an SSD; it will upload way faster.

3.     How fast can you upload and is there a limit?

I would personally suggest you to go for better upload speed and unlimited or as high as possible (if that is possible) than download since I guess you will be mainly using this to boost your ratio, and also to give back at the community like I previously said and not hit and run (hit&run is when you download a torrent fast and you don’t upload a thing or almost nothing, that is number 1 reason to get banned from a private tracker). Of course you will be using the seedbox for your privacy and safety, duhh… I didn’t forget that I am just giving you a few more reasons, so choose this wisely.

4.     Customer/Support wise

So what kind of customer support does it offer and is it good/fast? Better support usually means faster/quicker problem solver (if you get any that is, I hardly get any, I mainly mess things up myself and get support to fix my mess lol..) which can be crucial in some cases. Test them out with a pre-sales question/s (if you wish) and look at reviews, if you can find out any.

5.     Seedbox location

Where is your seedbox located? Does this even matter? Well it is not that important in my opinion (I am based in EU though so that’s basically why, most seedboxes are in EU so they connect fast to each other and I can grab my files fast from them). But if you want to be serious about this, check out where your private tracker is located (or at least the majority of the users) and how fast you ping to your server. Closer location = lower ping = faster speeds. You don’t want to grab a seedbox from USA for example, for a tracker in Asia, when you are located in EU (what a mess!) since none will enjoy this seedbox. By the way I would suggest you to go for a non USA seedbox anyway since with all that chaos going on over there nowadays it doesn’t seem safe. If you are an American though you can try a Canadian Seedbox and if that doesn’t work out go for a USA based one. Ask for a test file to check out how well your home connection can connect to the seedbox and what kind of speeds to expect.

Other optional stuff you can check out:

–         Does it allow public trackers? For example Thepiratebay. Most of the providers don’t allow them. If that is important for you find one that does allow them.

–         Does it have a trial period? If it does, you can first try the seedbox out, see if that fits your needs (speed wise for example. You can always request to download a test file from almost all the seedbox companies, to see the speed yourself though) before you buy it.

–         Pay full price or got a coupon? Check out our site for special offers and coupons; you can possibly save a few euros/dollars!

So these are the basic stuff you need to check out before you buy/rent a seedbox. This list of course is based on my own priorities. Some might prefer speed over space or download over upload for example. But if you want to build up your ratio I would suggest you go for upload speed. I do agree though that in some cases smaller space/HDD and faster connection can do amazing stuff (However, for very high speeds you will usually need an SSD, otherwise you will be limiting your speed based on your “slow” HDD)!

Why should you get a seedbox?

Hello there!

On the previous chapter we covered the question “What is a seedbox” (feel free to check it out now if you haven’t done that before) and like I said now it is time to see “Why you should consider getting a seedbox”. I will provide you with a few simple but great facts/truths!

Ok! I get what a seedbox is and does now, but why should I get one?

I thought you’d never ask! I’ve pointed out a few things/reasons on the previous chapter/article but let me give you a more detailed view here with more reasons.

1.     Anonymity/Privacy/Safety.

Like I previously said, it is a great way to hide your real identity, your real connection and IP and generally a great way to protect your privacy in total. You can even go 100% anonymous if you hide your payment. You can do that easily by using a prepaid card or bitcoins. Both are great options and combined with SFTP (talked about it on our previous chapter) no one will know what you are downloading or uploading.

2.     Speed!

This is another main reason why you’d want to choose a seedbox. The speeds vary from 10Mb/s up to 1Gbps! You get amazing speeds and you can literally download an HD movie within minutes and an operating system in a few seconds. Of course your upload speed is also amazing. I personally love to upload super fast! I can live with a bit slower download speed.

3.     Online 24/7 no worries.

Yup, it is online all day long downloading or uploading torrents/files fixing or ruining (I am kidding but seriously) your ratio. No need to worry if the power or your connection speed goes down or turning it off because you have to go on vacation.

4.     Private trackers and ratio.

If you are a member of a private tracker, you already know what I am talking about with the “ratio”. Ratio is a must (important factor) to keep your account on each private tracker and a seedbox is the best way to do it. I will eventually write a guide which will explain how to do that.

5.     Home connection.

Your home connection will be free for you, and your family & friends to use it anyway you want to. Even if your connection’s bandwidth is limited, having a seedbox won’t use it all and you will be able to manage it properly. You will be able to grab the torrents you want from your seedbox whenever you want to, without pushing your home connection all the time or when you need it and without risking your ISP limiting you for high usage (yeah, some ISPs do that..).

6.     Because it is COOL!

Yup you heard me! Well actually read me? Anyway, it is a great feeling to give back to the community and I love it! I can’t do much with my home connection and since I work from home I wouldn’t be able to do that efficiently, so I go with a high speed seedbox! Try that out yourself and you will remember me! What is a Seedbox?

I’ve decided to begin this blog’s career with the first question newcomers will have on their minds: what is a seedbox?

But before I go there, let me tell you a few words on how things are today on the NET.

Big corporations push for a more censored NET on a daily basis, limited access and various penalties for not following their “rules”. A few examples are the “Six Strikes” that went live in the USA a few months now, various three strike rules that you can find in France, New Zealand, etc, of course Russia which is pushing for more strict rules and last but not least UK, which is censoring sites massively all around the NET. So it is logical for you to want to protect your privacy and skip the risk of being penalized for something silly.

So, what is a seedbox after all?

A seedbox is a server (PC/computer if you prefer) which is hosted on a datacenter (huge buildings where they host hosting providers with high speeds etc), together with a ton other servers and can be used to download or upload torrents at a high speed from there.

This is rTorrent UI (User Interface). I will explain more later on!

How do you manage that?

When you get your seedbox you are given a login page and the information needed in order to get in there. So you just simply login there, normally like any other website (I forgot to mention that usually each seedbox comes with a unique (or dedicated if you prefer) IP which is like having a website but instead of SeedBoxCenter.com you type numbers/IP) from your browser and through that webpage you can download or upload torrents to or from your seedbox.

So I download torrents on my seedbox. How can I get them to my PC or how can I even upload something to it and seed it?

That’s an easy question. Usually through a free FTP program (like Filezilla) which is a program that connects your PC to your seedbox and from there you can download/grab or upload the files you want. Think of it like some kind of personal download manager. Some seedbox providers might let you download from your seedbox through a page (related to your seedbox of course), so there you can actually use a real download manager. Of course you can reach amazing speeds when you download directly from your seedbox. One more thing you might be interested in is SFTP, which, if the provider gives you that option, encrypts your transfers and not even your ISP will be able to tell what you are downloading or uploading to your seedbox. That makes it amazing and super safe!
